Marshallese women don’t get much of a chance for education. Or even just to get through high school. The main reasons: teen-age pregnancy, which usually means the end of school pursuits; little family support; and traditions of the culture that view the primary role for women as just cooking and caring for the family. Education drops away—and it’s very tough to get started again.
Start with MWEHN!
Start by contacting Josephine Heneus Hunter, a MWEHN Director and a Financial Aid Advisor at Portland Community College (see below). She can help you through the application process for college, at PCC and other schools like Chemeketa and Clark CC. Or she can help you find other resources. MWEHN will help you get going with education again—and keep on going!
Worried about paying for college? MWEHN will help you understand all the options, including talking with both new coeds and the parents. Or maybe a Community Ed course, or college credits during high school?
We can help in all these ways.
